Did you know there’s a thing called candle wax memory? What is it you may be wondering? Well, we will let you know in some time. But first…
Let us tell you that there’s a “right” way to burn your candle.
Burning a candle is easy. By making sure you are burning the candle the right way, you can extend its life, prevent unsightly soot, and burn it to its full potential. Candles often remember how they burned previously and this is called candle wax memory. The first burn creates a memory or wax pattern for the subsequent burn. Thus, it is important to melt the candle the right way – melt all the way out to the sides.
We have compiled a list of do’s and don’ts to make sure your candle burns to full potential.
-
The First Burn is Important
The first burn is the most important. Make sure to do it right.
To make your candle burn evenly and last as long as possible, light it up for about 3 to 4 hours for the first time. This gives the candle enough time to ensure that a melting pool is formed to the diameter of the vessel. This also helps create the candle wax memory for the subsequent burn and avoid the creation of a tunnel.
-
Trim the Wick
Trimming of the wick is essential before you light a candle. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before you light the candle and remove the debris, if any. Any debris present in the wax pool will add more fuel to the candle than it is designed to handle. This can cause the fire to flare up or start a small fire nearby.
Uneven or crooked wicks often cause dripping, uneven burning, sooting, or flaring. Moreover, if the wick is trimmed regularly, it increases the burning time up to 25%.
-
Burn the Candle on a Flat Surface
It is vital to burn the candle on a flat and even surface. Placing the candle on an uneven surface can lead to irregular burning and tunneling of the candle. Moreover, pillar candles drip excessively if they are not places on a flat surface.
-
Don’t Burn Longer Than Recommended
Don’t keep the candle burning for more than 4 to 5 hours. Burning a candle for too long often leads to the collection of carbon on the wick, further creating a mushroom wick. Some candles are often designed to burn for a short time. Make sure to follow the candle manufacturer’s instructions to lengthen the candle’s life.
-
Store the Candle Properly
When you are not burning the candle, it is important to store it in a cool, dark, and dry place with the lid on. This helps keep the candle clean of dust and debris.
Highly fragrant candles often have a life span of 6 to 12 months. Make sure to use the candles and replace them often, if you enjoy fragranced candles.
